Our web sites started as a small project at a well known Thai school in Samut Prakan. Due to the success and popularity of the web sites, a group of teachers and ex-students from the school decided to set up a company called Paknam Web Co. Ltd. in a townhouse in Samut Prakan city. The aim of the company, as before, was to promote Thailand life and culture to the world. It has always been our intention to provide this information for free. And we wish to continue in this way in the future. However, our popularity has started to contribute to our downfall.

In the beginning, the running expenses of the server were paid for with profits from our online bookstore at Thai Hypermarket. But, now that our web sites are receiving well over 50,000 visitors per day, we have found that we have to keep continually upgrading our server specifications. We now run on our own dedicated server which we thought would keep us steady for a long time. However, due to spikes in popularity, which causes the web pages to load slowly, we have had to upgrade again and again. The running of our server is now costing us thousands of dollars every year. That doesn't include the running of the Paknam Web company office. As you can see in the picture, we have four computers and both part-time and full-time staff. As we are a registered company we also have to hire an accountant and of course pay taxes and national insurance for our staff.

It is hard for a new company like us to keep going, but we are determined that we will continue with providing information about Thailand for free. In particular, we want to continue with the free lessons for learning Thai although it is costing us a lot of money.

We were planning to try and work out the problems with finances ourselves. However, we kept getting letters from people who were offering to donate money in order to keep everything running smoothly. One of them even came up with the idea of this "One Million Baht Project". So, that is where we are today. We have worked out that we would need at least 1,000,000 baht ($25,000) to keep the network running for about three years. This money would only be used for server expenses, domain name renewals, and the buying and upgrading of software which is needed to keep the web sites running. The money is also enough to upgrade the server beyond the specifications we have at the moment. This means that over the next three years we will be able to expand with bigger and better web sites.
